Lately I've been hearing some version of the same sentence from many of the people I talk to.

"I just can't seem to get myself to do things."

People say they can't focus. They can't follow through. They feel exhausted before the day even starts. And almost immediately, they assume the problem is personal.

Maybe I'm lazy. Maybe I lack discipline. Maybe everyone else is handling life better than I am.

I don't think that's what's happening.

I think many people are trying to function with nervous systems that have slowly shifted into survival mode.

And those are very different problems with very different solutions.

The nervous system was designed to help humans respond to challenge, then recover. But recovery requires something the modern environment rarely provides: a genuine signal that things are stable enough to stand down.

When uncertainty becomes the environment rather than the exception, the system stays activated. Not dramatically — just a low hum of vigilance running underneath everything.

And that state changes things in ways we don't always recognize as stress.

After a while, initiating even simple tasks feels harder than it should. The mind fogs. Sleep doesn't seem to fix the exhaustion. Small things feel disproportionately irritating. And there's a persistent sense of being slightly behind — not on anything specific, just behind. These get interpreted as character flaws: laziness, weakness, or lack of motivation.

But they make a lot more sense as the output of a system running near capacity for too long.

What I find most interesting is how normalized this state has become. People have adapted to it so thoroughly that it no longer feels like adaptation — it just feels like life. They stop asking whether the environment is sustainable and start asking what's wrong with them.

That shift in framing matters more than it might seem. Because the way we name a problem shapes the solutions we reach for.

If the problem is personal failure, the answer is more effort, more discipline, more optimization. Push harder.

But if part of what you're experiencing is an overloaded system adapting to conditions humans were never designed to sustain indefinitely, the conversation changes entirely.

Then the question becomes: what actually helps people regain clarity, flexibility, and presence inside environments that continuously pull them toward fragmentation?

That's a much more honest and accurate place to start.
